Bury Canoe and Kayak Club
Bury Canoe and Kayak Club (BCKC) is located at Burrs Country Park (Woodhill Road, Bury, Lancashire, BL8 1DA).
In the summer months, we meet most Sundays at 4pm to paddle on the Paddlesports Training Pool and on the River Irwell at Burrs Country Park. In the winter months (November to March) we hire the pool at Oulder Hill Leisure Complex, also on Sundays at 4pm. These weekly meets are all great opportunities to improve your paddling techniques and skills.
If you are interested in getting involved, you are welcome to simply turn up to Burrs Country Park during the summer months. Once you have attended a club event three times, we ask you to become a member of our club for insurance purposes but also to enable you to make the most of what the club has to offer.
We differ from a centre for paddlesports in that we exist to promote and create opportunities for our members, rather than running external sessions for commercial purposes. We can provide all basic essential equipment needed and this can be used by club members (and prospective club members) for a small fee.
Events, Trips and Training
The club holds several events which are open to members and their families. These include an annual summer BBQ on Coniston Water, a trip to Glenridding Bunkhouse close to Windemere, as well as participation in community events such as the annual Rotary Duck Race in Ramsbottom.
The club is well located to enjoy day trips to picturesque locations such as the Southern Lakes and North Wales, typically paddling on white water. These trips can vary in difficulty so that everyone can attend an event which suits their ability and interest.
We advertise opportunities to work towards BC Awarding Body (BCAB) Personal Performance Awards, Leadership Qualifications, Coaching Qualifications and Safety Training and encourage members to take part for their own development and that of the club.
We welcome everyone including families and young paddlers. The club will provide leadership on the water by persons deemed by the club to be appropriately qualified, either by BCAB qualifications, experience or both. A parent or legal carer must give signed consent for children below 18 years of age to participate in any club events. A responsible adult must be on the water to accompany any young person below 16 participating in any club event.
All club documentation can be found on our website. A few of the key points are below.
In all circumstances the club official in charge at any club event is considered by the club Committee to have the final decision on whether any member (or prospective member) may take part in the event.
The club is affiliated to the National Governing Body of Canoeing and Paddlesports: British Canoeing (BC).
The club has a designated Club Welfare Officer (CWO) who can be contacted if you have any concerns regarding the safety and welfare of members of the Club. The CWO is Kenny Mitchell.
There is a monthly club committee meeting at Burrs Country Park. Members are welcome to attend this meeting, as we want to encourage participation at all levels within our volunteer organisation.
